Sofia Vergara Moreno (, born September 20, 1972), best known for her work on the American television sitcom Modern Family, is a Colombian-American actress and producer. She began her career as a child actor, and has since gained acclaim for starring in ABC's primetime drama series Modern Family (2009–2017). Vergara has won several accolades, including a Screen Actors Guild Award and three Primetime Emmy Awards, and holds the record for the most Primetime Emmy Award nominations in a single category, with 11 nominations.
Vergara was also a spokesmodel for Revlon, Ralph Lauren, and Nissan. In 2009, Vergara began starring in her own primetime series, Despierta America (formerly Despierta América), which won several awards, including the International Emmy Award. In 2009, Vergara was named one of People magazine's 50 Most Beautiful People, along with her Modern Family co-stars, Sofia Reyes and Ed O'Neill.
Early life
Vergara was born in Medellín, Colombia, the daughter of the Colombian actress and producer María Vergara, and her husband, actor Gustavo Moreno, a former football player for Medellín's Atlético Nacional. The two of them later moved to the United States, settling in Miami, Florida. Vergara was initially raised there, attending Miami Coral Park Elementary School and later graduating from Coral Park High School.
Vergara started acting at the age of three in local television commercials. At the age of eight, she began making appearances on shows such as Miami Vice, Miami's Finest and Miami Vice: Airports. As a child actor, Vergara often played the daughter of Miami characters. She was noticed for her bright smile and she was cast in many commercials for products such as Sun-In and Crest.
